Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair
Bhagavad Gita 1.27
Sanskrit
श्वशुरान्सुहृदश्चैव सेनयोरुभयोरपि । तान्समीक्ष्य स कौन्तेयः सर्वान्बन्धूनवस्थितान् ॥1.27॥
Transliteration
śvaśurānsuhṛdaścaiva senayorubhayorapi | tānsamīkṣya sa kaunteyaḥ sarvānbandhūnavasthitān ‖1.27‖
Meaning
“Seeing all these kinsmen thus arrayed, Arjuna was overcome with deep compassion and, sorrowing, spoke these words.”
Key learning
Arjuna freezes not because he's a coward but because he feels deep love and pity for these people. The Gita respects that his collapse comes from a good place. But even love, without clear thinking, can leave you stuck and unable to do the right thing. Good feelings alone aren't enough to guide you.
How to apply this today
Honor your kind feelings, but don't let them make every decision by themselves. Caring about a struggling employee is right, but keeping them in a role that's sinking them and the team may not be. Loving your child is right, but rescuing them from every consequence can hurt them. Feel fully, then let clear thinking decide what to actually do.
