Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair
Bhagavad Gita 1.26
Sanskrit
तत्रापश्यत्स्थितान्पार्थः पितॄनथ पितामहान् । आचार्यान्मातुलान्भ्रातॄन्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्सखींस्तथा ॥1.26॥
Transliteration
tatrāpaśyatsthitānpārthaḥ pitṝnatha pitāmahān | ācāryānmātulānbhrātṝnputrānpautrānsakhīṃstathā ‖1.26‖
Meaning
“There Arjuna saw, standing in both armies, fathers and grandfathers, teachers, uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, and friends as well.”
Key learning
Suddenly the "enemy army" turns into actual faces: fathers, teachers, sons, friends. What was just an idea becomes real, loved people. This is the moment Arjuna's courage breaks, because it's much easier to fight a label than a person you know.
How to apply this today
Watch how easy it is to hurt people when you think of them as a group instead of individuals. It's easy to hate "the other side" until you share a meal with one of them. People are cruel online because they see usernames, not faces. When you're tempted to write off a whole group, remember real people stand behind that label. Let that soften how you treat them.
