Karma Yoga · The Yoga of Action
Bhagavad Gita 3.8
Sanskrit
Transliteration
Meaning
“Perform your prescribed duty, for action is superior to inaction; even the maintenance of the body would not be possible through inaction.”
Key learning
Spiritual life is rooted in doing your duties, not escaping them. Even the body you use to contemplate higher things depends on constant work, like the heart that never stops beating. Action is not a lesser path than quiet reflection. The honest duties of your roles in life are your real training ground.
How to apply this today
Write down your duties in each role you hold: parent, child, worker, citizen, friend. Treat them as practice rather than as interruptions to something more important. That might mean dinner together a few nights a week with phones away, calling your aging parents regularly, or delivering one piece of genuinely good work each week. Do not use 'being spiritual' as an excuse to neglect these, because doing them with care is the spirituality.
