Karma Yoga · The Yoga of Action
Bhagavad Gita 3.7
Sanskrit
यस्त्विन्द्रियाणि मनसा नियम्यारभतेऽर्जुन । कर्मेन्द्रियैः कर्मयोगमसक्तः स विशिष्यते ॥3.7॥
Transliteration
yastvindriyāṇi manasā niyamyārabhate'rjuna | karmendriyaiḥ karmayogamasaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate ‖3.7‖
Meaning
“But one who controls the senses by the mind, O Arjuna, and engages the organs of action in the yoga of action without attachment, that one excels.”
Key learning
The person who keeps their senses in check and throws themselves fully into work, without clinging to the results, is the one who truly excels. Surprisingly, this engaged, unattached worker is rated higher than the person who withdraws but secretly still craves. What matters is the quality of your engagement, not how much you abstain.
How to apply this today
Pour yourself fully into your work with your attention under control, rather than half-checking out in the name of balance. A parent fully present at homework time, phone away, is doing better than one meditating in another room while the child struggles alone. Doing your craft with skill and without grasping is itself a spiritual practice. Engage fully and do it well instead of pulling back while still longing.
