Transliteration

indriyāṇi parāṇyāhurindriyebhyaḥ paraṃ manaḥ | manasastu parā buddhiryo buddheḥ paratastu saḥ ‖3.42‖ evaṃ buddheḥ paraṃ buddhvā saṃstabhyātmānamātmanā | jahi śatruṃ mahābāho kāmarūpaṃ durāsadam ‖3.43‖

Meaning

The senses, they say, are superior; superior to the senses is the mind; superior to the mind is the intellect; and that which is superior even to the intellect is the Self. Thus knowing that which is beyond the intellect, steadying the self by the Self, slay the enemy, O mighty-armed one, in the form of desire, so hard to conquer.

Key learning

Inside you there are layers, from the most basic to the highest: the senses, then the mind, then your reasoning, and above all your deepest true Self. Each layer should be guided by the one above it. Most of our trouble comes when raw impulse takes charge of everything. You master desire by leading from the top, with your highest, wisest self in command.

How to apply this today

Use this order as a simple decision check. Before overeating: your senses want the sugar, your reason knows the health cost, your deeper self wants a long healthy life, so choose from the highest. Before the angry text: emotion wants payback, reason sees the damage, your deeper self wants peace, so pause and rewrite it. Before a big purchase: senses are dazzled, reason checks the budget, your deeper self values freedom, so wait a week.
