Bhagavad Gita 3.35
Sanskrit
श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् । स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः ॥3.35॥
Transliteration
śreyānsvadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmātsvanuṣṭhitāt | svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ ‖3.35‖
Meaning
“Better is one's own dharma, though imperfectly performed, than the dharma of another well-performed. Better is death in one's own dharma; the dharma of another is fraught with fear.”
Key learning
It's better to live your own true path imperfectly than to copy someone else's path perfectly. Living a life that isn't really yours carries a quiet fear underneath, because deep down you know it doesn't fit. Being yourself matters more than looking impressive.
How to apply this today
Ask honestly if any part of your life is really someone else's plan for you, like a career you chose to please family. Take some quiet time with paper and ask: what gives me energy, what drains me, what would I do if I weren't afraid of being judged. Your honest answer points to your real path. A path that's truly yours beats a fancier one that isn't.
