Bhagavad Gita 3.34
Sanskrit
इन्द्रियस्येन्द्रियस्यार्थे रागद्वेषौ व्यवस्थितौ । तयोर्न वशमागच्छेत्तौ ह्यस्य परिपन्थिनौ ॥3.34॥
Transliteration
indriyasyendriyasyārthe rāgadveṣau vyavasthitau | tayorna vaśamāgacchettau hyasya paripanthinau ‖3.34‖
Meaning
“Attraction and aversion abide in the senses toward their objects; let none come under their sway, they are one's waylayers on the path.”
Key learning
Your senses are always pulling you toward things you like and pushing you away from things you dislike. These quick likes and dislikes are not the real you, and they often lead you the wrong way. Honor who you really are, but don't blindly obey every craving or knee-jerk reaction.
How to apply this today
Learn to tell the difference between your true nature and a passing reaction. "I just need sugar at 4 PM" is usually a habit, not who you are, and it fades after a couple weeks without it. When you instantly dislike a person or idea, pause and question that feeling before acting on it. Don't let your reactions pretend to be you.
