Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair
Bhagavad Gita 1.15
Sanskrit
पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः । पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥1.15॥
Transliteration
pāñcajanyaṃ hṛṣīkeśo devadattaṃ dhanañjayaḥ | pauṇḍraṃ dadhmau mahāśaṅkhaṃ bhīmakarmā vṛkodaraḥ ‖1.15‖
Meaning
“Krishna blew Panchajanya; Arjuna blew Devadatta; and Bhima of terrible deeds blew his great conch Paundra.”
Key learning
Each conch has its own name; each warrior his own instrument. The text honors individuality even within a shared cause, no one is interchangeable. Everyone adds a particular sound to the whole.
How to apply this today
Respect the distinct "note" each person brings to a team effort, including your own. The loud closer, the quiet analyst, and the steady operator each play a different instrument; a good leader doesn't force them all to play the same one. Know your own strength and play it fully instead of imitating someone else.
