Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair

Bhagavad Gita 1.11

Sanskrit

अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः । भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि ॥1.11॥

Transliteration

ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ | bhīṣmamevābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi ‖1.11‖

Meaning

Therefore, all of you, stationed in your respective positions in the divisions of the army, protect Bhishma above all.

Key learning

After all the bluster, Duryodhana's real worry slips out: protect Bhishma. The whole anxious speech was circling one fear, that the key person might fall. Under all our noise there's usually a single real worry.

How to apply this today

Learn to find the one real fear hiding under a flood of complaints. After venting for ten minutes, ask: "What's the single thing I'm actually afraid of losing?" A long rant about your job often boils down to "I might not be respected." Naming that one thing helps more than chasing twenty symptoms.
