Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair
Bhagavad Gita 1.10
Sanskrit
अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम् । पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम् ॥1.10॥
Transliteration
aparyāptaṃ tadasmākaṃ balaṃ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam | paryāptaṃ tvidameteṣāṃ balaṃ bhīmābhirakṣitam ‖1.10‖
Meaning
“Our army, protected by Bhishma, is unlimited; but their army, protected by Bhima, is limited.”
Key learning
This line is famously ambiguous, it can mean "our strength is enough" or "theirs is." That blur is the point: an anxious mind can't even tell if it's winning. Fear scrambles judgment so badly the same facts read as both hope and doom.
How to apply this today
When your read of a situation keeps flipping between "we've got this" and "we're finished" within minutes, that's your cue to steady yourself, not to decide. Don't quit, sell, or confront in that state, sleep on it. When a forecast keeps reversing, usually your mood changed, not the facts.
