Karma Yoga · The Yoga of Action

Bhagavad Gita 3.3

Sanskrit

लोकेऽस्मिन् द्विविधा निष्ठा पुरा प्रोक्ता मयानघ । ज्ञानयोगेन साङ्ख्यानां कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम् ॥3.3॥

Transliteration

loke'smin dvividhā niṣṭhā purā proktā mayānagha | jñānayogena sāṅkhyānāṃ karmayogena yoginām ‖3.3‖

Meaning

The Blessed Lord said: In this world a twofold path was taught by Me of old, O sinless one, the yoga of knowledge for the contemplative, and the yoga of action for the active.

Key learning

There is more than one genuine path, suited to different kinds of people. The reflective, thinking type and the active, doing type each have their own way forward, and neither is better. People are not all the same. A path that frees one person can feel like a prison to another.

How to apply this today

Choose practices that fit who you actually are, not who you wish you were. If you are naturally active, working through service and staying engaged may help you more than forcing yourself to sit quietly and resenting it. Do not push your own path onto family members who are wired differently. Honor your real nature and let others honor theirs.
