Meaning

But if you will not fight this righteous battle, then, having abandoned your own duty and honour, you will incur sin. People will forever recount your infamy, and for one who has been honoured, dishonour is worse than death. The great warriors will think you withdrew from battle out of fear, and those who esteemed you highly will hold you lightly. Your enemies will speak many unspeakable words, scorning your prowess, what could be more painful than that?

Key learning

Krishna also makes a plain, worldly point: if Arjuna abandons his duty out of fear, he will live inside a lasting story of cowardice that enemies tell and admirers believe. For someone who has been respected, losing that respect can feel worse than death. The message is not 'live for others' opinions,' but 'do not pretend that walking away from a real duty has no social cost.'

How to apply this today

Before quitting a hard commitment, ask yourself the honest question: what is the true story of this exit, wisdom or fear that I will have to keep covering up? If you would need to spin it, you already know the answer. At the same time, do not be trapped by image; a principled choice that merely looks bad is different from running away. One useful tool: write two versions of how this decision will be remembered, the one your conscience would write and the one your critics would. Today, if facing a hard exit, write both versions and read them honestly.
