Transliteration
kathaṃ na jñeyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum | kulakṣayakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana ‖1.39‖ kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ | dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmo'bhibhavatyuta ‖1.40‖
Meaning
“With the destruction of the family, the eternal family dharmas perish; and when dharma is destroyed, adharma overwhelms the whole family.”
Key learning
Arjuna makes a fair point: when a community's shared values and duties fall apart, disorder rushes in to fill the gap. Families and cultures are held together by good habits and values passed down over time. When those break, the damage spreads across generations. The insight is solid, even though Arjuna is using it as an excuse to do nothing.
How to apply this today
Take seriously how much a family's or group's health depends on the values it actively passes on. The habits you keep, like honest talk, shared meals, respect, and a strong work ethic, are what your children soak up. Let them slide and something bigger starts to fray. A company's culture only lasts as long as people keep living it. Tend on purpose to the values you're handing down, because empty gaps don't stay empty.
