Arjuna Vishada Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair

Bhagavad Gita 1.19

Sanskrit

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् । नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलोऽभ्यनुनादयन् ॥1.19॥

Transliteration

sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat | nabhaśca pṛthivīṃ caiva tumulo'bhyanunādayan ‖1.19‖

Meaning

That tumultuous sound, resounding through heaven and earth, shattered the hearts of Dhritarashtra's sons.

Key learning

The Pandava conches "shattered the hearts" of the other side. Morale is a weapon, just sensing the opponent's confidence can break your resolve before a single blow lands. Much of any contest is decided in the mind first.

How to apply this today

Guard your inner morale, and don't let someone else's show of confidence crush you. A rival's slick launch or loud bravado is often partly theater, don't let the sound of it collapse your nerve. In negotiation, the other side's certainty may be an act. Hold your ground.
