Bhagavad Gita 2.46
Sanskrit
यावानर्थ उदपाने सर्वतः सम्प्लुतोदके । तावान्सर्वेषु वेदेषु ब्राह्मणस्य विजानतः ॥2.46॥
Transliteration
yāvānartha udapāne sarvataḥ samplutodake | tāvānsarveṣu vedeṣu brāhmaṇasya vijānataḥ ‖2.46‖
Meaning
“As much use as there is in a well when water floods everywhere, so much use is there in all the Vedas for the knower of Brahman who sees.”
Key learning
A village well is useful until a flood comes and covers everything with water. After that, you have all the water you could ever need, so the single well isn't special anymore. In the same way, rules, rituals, and study are helpful guides, but they are tools to reach a goal, not the goal itself. Once you truly understand, you have the whole thing directly.
How to apply this today
Use your methods with thanks, but notice when you've outgrown them. The strict diet that fixed your health can give way to good instincts; the rigid routine that saved you in a hard time can relax once steadiness becomes natural. When you teach others, give them clear steps but aim for their independence, not their dependence on you. Once a year, ask: is this practice still helping me, or am I just clinging to it out of habit?
