Meaning
“Flowery speech is uttered by the unwise, who delight in the letter of the Veda, O Partha, declaring ‘there is nothing else.’ Full of desires, with heaven as their goal, they offer rites that promise enjoyment and power as the fruit of action. For those attached to pleasure and power, whose minds are carried away by such words, the resolute one-pointed intelligence does not arise in concentration.”
Key learning
Krishna warns against turning spiritual life into a transaction. Some eloquent people treat sacred practice like a vending machine: do this ritual, get that reward, and claim there is nothing more. The fancy talk impresses, but it feeds the very craving the path is meant to heal. A mind hooked on getting things cannot reach the focused calm just described. The problem is not ritual itself, but the greedy, consumer attitude that can take over any practice.
How to apply this today
Check your own self-improvement and spiritual habits for the vending-machine attitude. Meditation done only as a productivity hack, or charity done only to score points, quietly feeds the ego it should soften. Be wary of teachers whose real pitch is wealth, status, or guaranteed results, no matter how spiritual their words sound. Now and then, do one practice with no promised payoff, like quiet anonymous service, to keep the unselfish muscle alive. Today, ask of one of your practices: is this loosening my grasping, or just decorating it?
